On 23 June, the Internet Society (ISOC) and the Global Cyber Alliance (GCA), on behalf of the Common Good Cyber Secretariat, announced the launch of the Common Good Cyber Fund, a global initiative to strengthen global cybersecurity by supporting nonprofit organizations that deliver core cybersecurity services that protect civil society actors at high risk and the internet as a whole.
The GFCE, as part of the Common Good Cyber Secretariat, strongly supports this initiative, as it reflects the growing need for sustainable investment in the organizations that make digital security possible, particularly for vulnerable communities. Moreover, as the GFCE provides awareness, expertise and implementation through supporting cyber capacity building projects worldwide, long-term and reliable funding is crucial in sustaining its activities.
The Common Good Cyber Fund is a first-of-its-kind effort to fund cybersecurity for the common good, for everyone, including those at the greatest risk, has the potential to fundamentally improve cybersecurity for billions of people around the world.
In advance of the G7 Leaders’ Summit, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the Prime Minister of Canada announced that they would both invest in the Fund, and during the G7 Leaders’ Summit, all the G7 Leaders announced that they would support initiatives like the Fund. Alongside the GFCE, the Common Good Cyber Secretariat is supported by Shadowserver Foundation, Institute for Security and Technology (IST), Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), CyberPeace Institute (CPI), Cyber Threat Alliance (CTA), and the Global Cyber Alliance (GCA), all working together to strengthen global cybersecurity.
The Fund will be administered by the Internet Society, with strategic direction from an expert advisory board. More information about the Fund can be found here.
